Melon-headed whales stranding in Madagascar
A melon-headed whales (Peponocephala electra) stranding was observed since the 03th of June in a mangroves estuary near Antsohihy town (north-west adagascar).
04 June information: According to locals, at least 60 inds are stranding, but other fishermen affirm that another similar group is staying in the estuary bay. 15 animals died already. A state veterinary already injected formohol in one of the dead animals to perform autopsy. Biopsy samples were sent to the Institut Pasteur for pathological analysis. Local people are working hard to free these animals, but technical means are lacking.
Last news : 200 individus are stranding. 31 dead. Ministry representatives (veterinary) are flying down there to assess the situation with WCS specialists. Euthanasia “solution” is proposed… Thus, we are looking for any advices to resolve this crisis. Thanks in advance.
